ABOUT Accenture COMPANY

Accenture is a multinational provider of professional services offering a wide range of digital, technology, operations, strategy, and consulting services. Accenture, which has its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, serves clients in over 120 countries and a range of industries, including technology, healthcare, financial services, and more. Accenture assists clients in overcoming the difficulties presented by the quickly changing business environment with an emphasis on innovation and digital transformation.

The company is well-known for its proficiency in bringing new technologies to clients’ attention and facilitating organizational change to help them succeed commercially. In the global consulting and technology services sector, Accenture remained a major player as of January 2022, when I last updated my knowledge. Accenture plc is a Dublin-based professional services company with Irish-American roots[3][4], specializing in IT consulting and services. [5]

A Fortune Global 500 company, it generated $64.1 billion in revenue in 2023.[2] More than three-quarters of the Fortune Global 500 and 91 of the Fortune Global 100 are among Accenture’s current clientele.[6] In terms of personnel, Accenture is regarded as the biggest consulting firm globally as of 2022. When it carried out a feasibility study for General Electric to install a computer at Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky,[10] it led to GE installing a UNIVAC I computer and printer,[11] thought to be the first commercial use of a computer in the United States.

Accenture was founded as the business and technology consulting division of accounting firm Arthur Andersen[9] in the early 1950s.[12] Joseph Glickauf was the head of Arthur Andersen’s administrative services division and one of the early pioneers of computer consulting. Andersen Worldwide Société Coopérative (AWSC) split off Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting in 1989. There was growing friction between Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting during the 1990s.

While Arthur Andersen was competing with Andersen Consulting through its own newly established business consulting service line called Arthur Andersen Business Consulting, Andersen Consulting was paying Arthur Andersen up to 15% of its profits annually (a provision of the 1989 split was that the more profitable unit – whether AA or AC – pay the other the 15 percent). When Andersen Consulting placed the 15% transfer payment for that year and subsequent years into escrow and filed a breach of contract lawsuit against AWSC and Arthur Andersen, the dispute reached a breaking point in 1998.

After the arbitration with the International Chamber of Commerce concluded in August 2000, Andersen Consulting severed its contractual relationship with AWSC and Arthur Andersen. As a condition of the arbitration settlement, Andersen Consulting had to rename the company to Accenture and pay Arthur Andersen the $1.2 billion that had been held in escrow. Andersen Consulting changed its name to “Accenture” on January 1st, 2001.

“Accent on the future” is where the word “Accenture” originates. After an internal competition, Kim Petersen, a Danish employee from the company’s Oslo, Norway office, submitted the name “Accenture”. According to Petersen, the name should convey the company’s ambition to be a top performer and global leader in consulting, and it should not be offensive in any of the nations where Accenture conducts business. Accenture’s banner for its July 19, 2001, initial public offering, which was displayed on the New York Stock Exchange Building.

Accenture’s initial public offering (IPO) started trading on the New York Stock Exchange on July 19, 2001, with a price per share of $14.50. Accenture was one of the four publicly traded federal contractors that were incorporated in a tax haven, according to a report released in October 2002 by the Congressional General Accounting Office (GAO).[16] Unlike Accenture, the other three were first incorporated in the US before re-incorporating in a tax haven to reduce their US taxes. Because they believed Accenture to be a US-based company, critics—most notably, former CNN journalist Lou Dobbs[17]—reported Accenture’s decision to incorporate in Bermuda as a US tax avoidance ploy.[18]

“Prior to incorporating in Bermuda, Accenture was operating as a series of related partnerships and corporations under the control of its partners through the mechanism of contracts,” the GAO said, failing to identify Accenture as a US-based company. Accenture caused a stir in June 2018 when it revealed how much the company was charging to hire 7,500 officers for Customs and Border Protection. Accenture had been billing the US Government for almost $40,000 per hire under the $297 million contract—a sum greater than the typical officer’s yearly compensation.[32]

In December 2018, the DHS Office of Inspector General released a report stating that through the first ten months of the contract, Accenture had received payments totaling $13.6 million. Against a contract goal of 7,500 hires over five years, they had hired two agents. The report, which stated that “Accenture has already taken longer to deploy and delivered less capability than promised,” was released as a “management alert,” signaling a problem that needed to be addressed right away.

CEO Pierre Nanterme resigned from his role in January 2019 due to health concerns. He was diagnosed with colon cancer and passed away in France twenty days after resigning, at the age of fifty-nine. David Rowland, chief financial officer, was named CEO in the interim.[35]

With effect from September 2019, Julie Sweet, formerly the CEO of Accenture North America, was named the company’s new CEO in July 2019.[36] Contractors from Accenture’s Austin, Texas, office who handled Facebook’s content moderation responsibilities wrote an open letter to the social media giant in February 2019, detailing unfavorable working conditions and a “Big Brother environment” that included stringent non-disclosure agreements and limited work breaks.
