India’s flag carrier airline is Air India Limited, sometimes just called Air India. It is one of the biggest and oldest airlines in the nation, having been founded in 1932. Passengers are connected to a variety of global destinations via Air India’s domestic and international routes. The airline is well-known for both its unique Maharaja mascot and its dedication to offering the best possible air travel services. Air India has been a major player in the aviation sector for a long time, helping to connect India to the rest of the world and promote travel.

It still serves as a symbol of India’s aspirations and aviation history while providing travelers with a dependable and comfortable flying experience. India’s national airline is called Air India.[7] The Tata Group owns it through Air India Limited.[8][9] Air India serves 102 domestic and international destinations with its fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.[10][11] The airline serves multiple focus cities throughout India in addition to its hub at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. With an 18.6% market share, Air India is India’s biggest international airline.[12]

Air India offers service to more than 60 international locations on five continents. On July 11, 2014, the airline joined Star Alliance as its 27th member. J. R. D. Tata established the airline in 1932 under the name Tata Airlines. Tata piloted the airline’s first single-engine De Havilland Puss Moth, transporting mail from the Drigh Road Aerodrome in Karachi to the Juhu Aerodrome in Bombay, and then on to Madras (now Chennai). It changed its name to Air India and became a public limited company following World War II. When it received its first Boeing 707, dubbed Gauri Shankar, on February 21, 1960, it became the first airline in Asia to operate a jet.[13]

There were attempts in 2000 and 2001 to privatize Air India, and following its merger with Indian Airlines in 2006, it started to lose money. Via its subsidiary Air India Express, Air India also runs flights to domestic and Asian locations. The Maharajah (Emperor) is the mascot of Air India. The previous logo featured a flying swan with the Konark wheel inside, but it was replaced in 2023 with a new design that was modeled after the airline’s iconic Jharokha window pattern. Formerly known as Tata Air Services, Air India was established by Indian aviator and business magnate J. R. D. Tata of Tata Sons before being renamed Tata Airlines[14].In [15]

After Tata won an Imperial Airways mail delivery contract in April 1932, the aviation division of Tata Sons was established with two single-engine De Havilland Puss Moths. In October 1932, Nevill Vintcent, a friend and former Royal Air Force pilot of Tata’s, piloted a Puss Moth that Tata had flown from Karachi to Bombay (now Mumbai) and then on to Madras (now Chennai).[16] Two aircraft, a de Havilland Leopard Moth and a Puss Moth, made up the airline fleet. Using a six-seater Miles Merlin, the airline operated its first domestic route from Bombay to Trivandrum.[21]

It changed its name to Tata Air Services in 1938 and then to Tata Airlines. In 1938, Delhi and Colombo in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) were added as additional destinations.[16] The airline provided support to the Royal Air Force in the Second World War, helping with troop movements, supply shipping, refugee rescue, and aircraft maintenance. Following the Second World War, regular commercial flights were resumed in India, and on July 29, 1946, Tata Airlines was incorporated as a public limited company, operating as Air India.[3]

The Government of India purchased 49% of the airline in 1948 following Indian independence in 1947.[22] The airline’s first international flight took place on June 8, 1948, when a Lockheed Constellation L-749A named Malabar Princess (registered VT-CQP) took off from Bombay on its way to London Heathrow.[16] Air India began operating its first long-haul, nonstop route from New Delhi to New York City in 1993. As the first Asian airline to join the Jet Age, Air India International introduced its first Boeing 707-420 on February 21, 1960.[28][29]

The airline began flying to New York on May 14, 1960.[27] The airline was formally renamed Air India on June 8, 1962[3], and on June 11, 1962, Air India made history by becoming the first all-jet airline in history. When the airline received its first Boeing 747-200B, Emperor Ashoka (registered VT-EBD)[31], in 1971, it unveiled a new livery and branding called Palace in the Sky. Air India received its first Airbus A310-300 in 1986.[27] When Air India received a Boeing 747-400 named Konark (registered VT-ESM) in 1993, it was used to conduct the first-ever non-stop flight from New York to Delhi.
