ABOUT FRANKLIN TEMPLETON COMPANY

Franklin Templeton is a global investment management firm renowned for its expertise in delivering comprehensive investment solutions. Headquartered in San Mateo, California, the company has a rich history dating back to 1947. As a prominent player in the financial industry, Franklin Templeton offers a diverse array of investment products, including mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). With a global perspective and a commitment to in-depth research, the firm caters to a wide range of clients, from individual investors to institutions and financial professionals.

Franklin Templeton is recognized for its innovative approach to investment and dedication to helping clients navigate the complexities of financial markets to achieve their long-term goals. Founded as Franklin Distributors, Inc. in 1947 in New York City, Franklin Resources, Inc. is an American multinational holding company that is collectively referred to as Franklin Templeton, along with its subsidiaries. Rupert Johnson Sr., the company’s founder, admired Benjamin Franklin, after whom it is named. It is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BEN.

The company’s New York headquarters were relocated to San Mateo, California, in 1973.[2] Franklin Templeton managed assets under management (AUM) of US$1.4 trillion as of October 12, 2020, on behalf of individual, institutional, and professional investors. Rupert H. (Harris) Johnson Sr. (1900–1989), who operated a prosperous retail brokerage business out of a Wall Street office, founded the company in 1947 in New York.[4] He chose to name the business after the American polymath Benjamin Franklin, who advocated thrift and caution when it came to investing and saving money.[5]

Franklin Custodian Funds were the company’s first offering of mutual funds; they were a range of bond and equity funds with a cautious management style aimed at most investors. In 1957, at the age of 24, Charles B. Johnson, also known as Charlie, succeeded his father as president and chief executive officer following Rupert Sr.’s retirement. The total assets under management of the funds at the time were US$2.5 million.[6] Charlie’s brother Rupert Johnson Jr. started working for the company in 1965. In 1971, Franklin went public.[8] Franklin’s New York offices were relocated to California in 1973 after the company purchased Winfield & Company, an investment firm based in San Mateo, California.

The combined company employed about 60 people and managed assets worth close to $250 million USD. Franklin Money Fund saw a growth spurt in 1979 that turned it into the company’s first billion-dollar fund and set the stage for the 1980s asset boom. The company’s total assets under management doubled (almost doubled) annually for the following six years, beginning in 1980. In 1986, the company’s shares were listed for trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The business established its first office outside of North America in Taiwan that same year. Franklin purchased L.F. Rothschild Fund Management Company in 1988.

From slightly more than US$2 billion in 1982 to over US$40 billion in 1989, Franklin’s assets under management increased (the 1987 crash had little effect on Franklin’s income and bond funds). The common name Franklin Templeton originated from Franklin’s acquisition of Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. in October 1992, at an alleged cost of $913 million.[9] Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. was founded by the father of mutual fund pioneer Sir John Templeton, who jointly owned 70% of the company with his son, Dr. John Templeton, and John Galbraith.

The Mutual Series of funds’ maker, Heine Securities Corporation, amalgamated with the Franklin Templeton complex in November 1996. In order to strengthen its position in Canada, Franklin purchased Bissett Funds in October 2000. To this day, Bissett is one of Franklin’s most important brands there. Franklin Templeton purchased The Fiduciary Trust Company in April of 2001. At the time of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Fiduciary Trust Company International, a company owned by the Franklin family, employed over 650 people at its office located in Two World Trade Center 87 workers perished in the collapse [12].

The company offers specialized knowledge in every category of assets. Among other brands, it sells goods under the Fiduciary, Franklin, Templeton, and Mutual Series names. The company, like other big investment firms, offers a broad range of funds, but it is most recognized for bond funds (marketed under the Franklin brand), international funds (marketed under the Templeton brand), and value funds (marketed under the Mutual Series brand). As of April 2007, Franklin Resources ranked 7th overall among securities companies and 445th in the Fortune 500.[15]

In the same month, USA Today claimed that BEN stock had increased by 64,224% since 1982 and was the best stock pick for the previous 25 years based on returns.[16] Franklin Resources, Inc. managed more than $570 billion in assets globally as of July 31, 2008.[17] Franklin Templeton was named “King of the Decade” by Barron’s Magazine in February 2009, for the ten-year period ending in 2008, among fund families.

A total of $1.4 trillion in assets under management (AUM) across one of the widest ranges of top-tier investment teams in the business made Franklin Templeton one of the largest independent, specialized global investment managers in the world when it acquired Legg Mason, Inc. and its numerous specialist investment managers in July 2020. By combining their efforts, Franklin Templeton is now much more deeply ingrained in important regions and has a broad investment platform with a well-balanced AUM from institutional and retail clients.
