Drexel, Morgan & Co., which was established in 1889 by J.P. Morgan and Anthony J. Drexel, provided funding for Edison’s research and assisted in the consolidation of several of his independent businesses into the Edison General Electric Company, which was incorporated in New York on April 24, 1889. In the same year, the new business purchased Sprague Electric Railway & Motor Company.[20][21] Not all of Edison’s businesses were included in the consolidation; most notably, the Edison Illuminating Company—which would eventually become Consolidated Edison—was left out.[Reference required] The American Electric Company was founded in 1880 by Gerald Waldo Hart in New Britain, Connecticut.

A few years later, it merged with the Charles Coffin-led Thomson-Houston Electric Company. Hart departed in 1887 to take a position as superintendent at the Edison Electric Company.[22] With the backing of Drexel, Morgan & Co., Edison General Electric Company and Thomson-Houston Electric Company merged in 1892 to form General Electric.[21] Even now, the original facilities of both businesses are still run by GE. Following its incorporation in New York, General Electric maintained its corporate headquarters at the Schenectady facility for many years. Canadian General Electric, the equivalent of General Electric in Canada, was established at about the same time.

The National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) was absorbed by General Electric into its lighting division in 1911. The lighting division headquarters of General Electric were located in Nela Park, East Cleveland, Ohio. Since then, the lighting division has stayed in the same place. After acquiring the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America in 1919, Owen D. Young formed the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) through GE. His goal was to increase radio communications between countries. RCA served as GE’s radio sales retail division.[29]

Co-founding the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1926, RCA was instrumental in the development of two radio broadcasting networks. General Electric was forced to divest itself of RCA in 1930 after being accused of breaking antitrust laws. Ernst Alexanderson of General Electric Realty Plot, located at 1132 Adams Road in Schenectady, New York, made the first demonstration of television broadcast reception in 1927.[31][32] Using GE’s W2XAD, he produced what is believed to be the country’s first public broadcast on January 13, 1928[31].

Four GE executives’ homes featured the images on 1.5 square inches (9.7 square centimeters) screens. The audio was carried by WGY (AM) on GE. The experimental television station W2XAD changed its name to WRGB, and it was owned and run by General Electric until 1983, along with WGY and WGFM (now WRVE). The company entered the cable industry in 1965 when it was awarded a non-exclusive franchise through its subsidiary, General Electric Cablevision Corporation, in Schenectady.[34]

General Electric increased its holdings on February 15, 1965, through the acquisition of additional cable holdings through its subsidiaries General Electric Broadcasting Company and General Electric Cablevision Corporation, as well as additional television stations to reach the FCC’s maximum limit. In addition, the company owned television stations like WSIX-TV (later WNGE-TV, now WKRN) in Nashville and KOA-TV (now KCNC-TV) in Denver. However, similar to WRGB, General Electric sold off the majority of its broadcasting holdings but retained the Denver television station[38] until 1986, when General Electric acquired RCA and converted it to an owned-and-operated station.
