The ideal growth environment for kelp is nutrient-rich water that is between 6 and 14 °C (43 and 57 °F) in temperature. Some genera—like Macrocystis and Nereocystis, for example—have remarkable growth rates; they can grow up to half a meter a day and reach enormous heights of 30 to 80 meters (100 to 260 feet).In the past, the term “kelp” was closely associated in the 19th century with seaweeds that could be burned to produce soda ash or sodium carbonate. For this, seaweeds belonging to the orders Fucales and Laminariales were used.

To assess the effectiveness of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) transport anatomy, a 2015 study examined the allometric relationships (or whether SEs correlated with an organism’s size) of six distinct laminariales species. Researchers anticipated that the phloem of kelp would function similarly to the xylem of plants, exhibiting comparable allometric trends to reduce pressure gradient. Kelp species have experienced convergent evolution within their own phylogeny, which has resulted in niche conservatism,

in addition to convergent evolution with plants.[15] Because of this niche conservatism, some kelp species have diverged into different niches through adaptive radiation, whereas other species have convergently evolved to share similar niches. Functional traits (blade mass per area, stiffness, strength, etc.) of 14 different species of kelp were examined in a 2020 study, and it was discovered that many of these traits evolved convergently across the kelp phylogeny.

Many of these convergently evolved traits for structural reinforcement also correlate with distribution along a wave disturbance gradient, where different species of kelp occupy slightly different environmental niches. The plasticity of some structural traits has been crucial to understanding the evolutionary history of the phyla because of the frequently varied and turbulent habitat that kelp inhabit. One crucial aspect of kelp adaptations to oceanic environments that plasticity aids in is the exceptionally high levels of morphological homoplasy among lineages. In actuality, this has made it challenging to classify brown algae.[16]

Because of the roughness of the wave disturbance regime, kelp frequently shares morphological characteristics with other species within their region, but they can also have somewhat different appearances from other members of their species that are found in different wave disturbance regimes. The majority of the time, kelp plasticity is related to the morphology of the blades, including their thickness, ruffle, and width. Kelp have had to modify their dispersal strategies to effectively utilize ocean currents. Certain kelp structures’ buoyancy permits species to spread out with the current of the water.
