ABOUT KEYWORDS STUDIOS COMPANY

One of the top worldwide suppliers of technical services to the video game industry is Keywords Studios. With its main office located in Dublin, Ireland, Keywords Studios provides a wide range of services, such as player support, audio production, art creation, testing, and localization. With a global network of offices and studios, Keywords Studios helps publishers and game developers create immersive, high-caliber, culturally relevant gaming experiences for a wide range of players. The business is essential to the ecosystem of video game development because it offers specialized services that guarantee the commercial viability and readiness of game content.

Based in Leopardstown, Ireland, Keywords Studios plc provides services to the video game industry. Giorgio Guastalla and Teresa Luppino founded the company in 1998, and it started out localizing business software. Later, it moved into the video game industry. Guastalla was succeeded as CEO by Andrew Day in 2009, and the business successfully concluded its IPO on the London Stock Exchange in 2013. Several other businesses, such as GameSim, D3T, Heavy Iron Studios, and High Voltage Software, have since been acquired by Keywords. In 1998, Italian-Irish entrepreneur Giorgio Guastalla and his wife Teresa Luppino launched Keywords Studios.

Giorgio had previously worked for Microsoft in Dublin.[2][3][4] Originally operating under the name Keywords International, the business was founded in Leopardstown, a Dublin suburb, and offered localization services for business software.[2][5][6] In 2001, a regional office was opened in Rome.[7] Keywords started to gradually get involved in the video game industry in 2004.[4][7] Guastalla’s longtime friend and native of Johannesburg, Andrew Day, joined Keywords in March 2009 at his request and rose to the position of chief executive officer (CEO).[4][7]

Keywords employed 50 people and generated €3.5 million in revenue at this time.[8] Day aimed to establish Keywords as a “one-stop shop” for all phases of video game development, seeing the supplier side as extremely fragmented in the video game industry.[8] Day also wanted to change the company’s heavy reliance on a single client.[4] He implemented a five-year plan that was to culminate in the company’s flotation in 2014 and completely redirected the company’s focus to video games.

Keywords declared in June 2013 that it planned to list and sell fifty-six percent of its shares on the London Stock Exchange’s Alternative Investment Market.[2] At this point, the business employed 120 people and generated a pre-tax profit of €2.74 million on €14.34 million in sales.[10] In the process, Keywords Studios Limited, a new company, was incorporated in the UK. The new company took over all of the assets of the old company, Keywords International Limited, and changed its name to Keywords Studios plc on July 8.[11][12] Keywords Studios floated on July 12 and raised £28 million.

Numis Securities ran the offer and acted as a financial adviser.[14] After that, Ross Graham was appointed as its chairman. After the IPO was concluded, Day considered expanding the company through acquisitions.[6] In January 2014, it made its first acquisition when it bought voice production services company Liquid Violet.[17] 2,600 people worked at Keywords Studios at the end of 2016, 120 of whom were based in its Dublin headquarters.[8] The acquisition of VMC in October 2017 increased Keywords’ workforce by 1,300 workers.

Davy Group claims that as a result of this acquisition, Keywords is now the biggest supplier of functionality quality assurance.[8] The establishment of Keywords Ventures, a venture capital fund with the goal of assisting startups, was announced by Keywords in July 2018. AppSecTest was the first company under this fund that Keywords invested in, acquiring a 45% stake. Igor Efremov was appointed chief creative officer and Andrew Brown was appointed chief marketing officer in the same month.[19] David Broderick announced his resignation, and in November 2019, Jon Hauck was brought on as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Keywords.[20]

Day and Hauck took a 20% pay cut in 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.[21] Employees expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s handling of the matter, claiming that despite health concerns, operations had stayed mostly unchanged.[22] The company raised £100 million in May of that year in order to buy out businesses that had been damaged by the pandemic.[23] Keynotes Studios appointed Sonia Lashand Sedler as its chief operating officer (COO) in January 2021.[24] In March 2021, Day took a temporary leave of absence due to health concerns; Hauck and Sedler assumed joint interim CEO responsibilities.

Day formally resigned as CEO and member of the board of directors in June, with Keywords Studios announcing his impending retirement. He will continue to serve as an advisor to the board for a further six months.[25] Day was succeeded by Bertrand Bodson, a former Novartis chief digital officer, on December 1, 2021.[26] Guastalla left his position as non-executive director of Keywords Studios in January 2022 to concentrate on his other ventures.[27] Sedler, who departed the company in March citing personal reasons, followed him shortly after.

Whelan House, located in Leopardstown’s South County Business Park, serves as the headquarters of Keywords Studios.[30] For €422,722, the company leased Whelan House’s entire ground floor as well as sections of the first and lower ground floors in September 2017.[31] The food import company Italicatessen, which Guastalla and Luppino started in 2002, caters to Keywords Studios’ main office. PEQ Holdings, a 90% Guastalla-owned business, formerly held 6.3% of Keywords Studios’ shares, or £58.1 million, making it the largest single shareholder.[3] As of 2022, 11,141 people work worldwide for Keywords Studios.[1]
