Lenovo is a global technology corporation with its main office located in Beijing, China, and several operational hubs across the globe. Originally established as “Legend,” Lenovo began as a distributor of computer hardware in 1984. By acquiring IBM’s personal computer division in 2004, the company strengthened its position as a significant participant in the worldwide PC industry. These days, Lenovo is well-known for creating, producing, and marketing a broad variety of tech goods, such as servers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, personal computers, and IT management software. The company offers a wide range of products to meet the needs of the business and consumer markets.

One of the biggest manufacturers of personal computers in the world, Lenovo has continuously received praise. The company is well known for its inventiveness, specializing in the development of innovative yet approachable gadgets. Particularly, Lenovo’s laptops are highly regarded for their build quality, functionality, and durability. Lenovo Group Limited is a Chinese multinational technology company that specializes in designing, manufacturing, and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, business solutions, and related services.

Lenovo is often abbreviated as Lenovo (/ləˈnoʊvoŊ/ lə-NOH-voh, Chinese: 联想; pinyin: Liánxiǎng).[4] The company produces workstations, servers, supercomputers, data storage devices, IT management software, smartphones, tablets, desktops, laptops, and smart televisions. ThinkPad business laptops (bought from IBM), IdeaPad, Yoga, and Legion consumer laptop lines, and IdeaCentre and ThinkCentre desktop computer lines are some of its most well-known brands. According to unit sales, Lenovo is the biggest supplier of personal computers worldwide as of 2021.

Lenovo sells its products in more than 180 countries and operates in more than 60 of them.[Reference required] Its global headquarters are located in Beijing and Morrisville, North Carolina, in the United States. It was incorporated in Hong Kong [1].[2][3] It maintains research facilities in Morrisville, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Yamato (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan)[4]. Lenovo NEC Holdings is a joint venture between NEC and Lenovo that manufactures personal computers for the Japanese market.

On November 1, 1984, Liu Chuanzhi and ten other seasoned engineers, along with Danny Lui,[11] formally established Lenovo in Beijing with a 200,000 yuan investment.[10][12] Lenovo’s incorporation was approved by the Chinese government on the same day. One of Lenovo’s founders, Jia Xufu (贍续福), stated that the initial meeting to prepare for launching the business took place on October 17 of that year. All eleven of the original staff members showed up.

Every founder was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Institute of Computing Technology. Zeng Maochao approved the 200,000 yuan used as startup capital. The company’s organizational structure was set in 1985 following the Lunar New Year. Departments of engineering, technology, administration, and offices were included.[10] Initially, the group tried and failed to import televisions. It rebranded as a computer quality assurance company. It also attempted to sell a digital watch but was unsuccessful.

Lenovo ran its first job posting on the front page of the China Youth News in May 1988. In China at the time, these advertisements were extremely uncommon. 280 of the 500 responders were chosen to take a written job assessment. A total of 120 applicants underwent in-person interviews. 58 people received offers, even though interviewers initially only had the power to hire 16 candidates.

Liu Chuanzhi was granted permission by the government to establish a subsidiary in Hong Kong and relocate there with five other staff members. Lui’s father supported his son’s goals by providing loans and mentoring while he was already in Hong Kong. In 1988, Liu relocated to Hong Kong. During this time, Liu and his coworkers chose to walk rather than take public transportation in order to save money.

They rented hotel rooms for meetings in order to maintain appearances. Lenovo began producing and selling computers under its own brand in 1990.[14] The company’s first notable achievement was the mainframe computer, KT8920.[10] Additionally, it created a circuit board that processed Chinese characters on IBM-compatible personal computers. Following a 1994 Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) that raised approximately US$30 million[15] at HK$1.33 per share, Lenovo (known as Legend at the time) went public.[16] Many analysts were upbeat about Lenovo prior to the IPO.

The company’s stock price initially showed signs of undervaluation, peaking at HK$2.07 on its first day of trading and closing at HK$2.00. The offering’s proceeds were utilized to finance the opening of sales offices in Europe, North America, and Australia as well as to raise working capital and enhance and expand production and research and development.

In 1998, Lenovo introduced the Tianxi (天禧) computer. One of its key features was a button that instantly connected users to the internet and launched the Web browser, making it simple for inexperienced Chinese consumers to use computers and access the internet. It came with a year’s worth of Internet service and was co-branded with China Telecom.

1998 saw the release of The Tianxi. It was the outcome of two years of development and research. Its shell-shaped case was colored in pastel shades, and beneath its screen was a seven-port USB hub. The Tianxi was the most popular computer in Chinese history as of 2000. In 2000 alone, more than one million units were sold.
