ABOUT CANONICAL COMPANY

Founded in 2004, Canonical Ltd. is a UK-based software company best known for creating and maintaining the Ubuntu operating system. Ubuntu is a well-known open-source Linux distribution that places a strong emphasis on community involvement, usability, and adherence to free software ideals. For companies and individuals using Ubuntu, Canonical offers a variety of services, such as cloud solutions, enterprise support, and consulting. Apart from Ubuntu, Canonical has worked on a number of other projects, including the creation of the Snap packaging format and the Juju orchestration tool.

The business has made a substantial contribution to the advancement of open-source software in the technology sector and is a major player in the Linux ecosystem. Mark Shuttleworth, a South African businessman, founded and funds Canonical Ltd.[4], a privately held computer software company with headquarters in the UK, to promote commercial support and related services for Ubuntu and related projects. With offices in London, Austin, Boston, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Tokyo, and the Isle of Man, Canonical has workers in more than 70 countries.

Canonical Ltd. has initiated and is still supporting a number of projects. These are primarily tools or free and open-source software (FOSS) meant to facilitate better communication and cooperation between contributors and developers of free software. A Contributor License Agreement must be signed for certain projects. Canonical opened an international online store in 2007 where it sold Ubuntu-branded products and offered support services.

In 2008, it expanded that business by opening a store in the United States with expedited shipping.[17] The term “Ubuntu” was trademarked concurrently with apparel and accessories. Shuttleworth stated that Canonical was not yet close to profitability and that its business model was service provision in an interview with the Guardian published in May 2008. According to Canonical, it will take three to five years to turn a profit. Shuttleworth thought Canonical was positioning itself to take advantage of the growing demand for services linked to free software.

This tactic has been likened to Red Hat’s business tactics from the nineties.[19] According to Shuttleworth, Canonical’s revenue was “creeping” toward US$30 million, the company’s break-even point, as reported in an early 2009 New York Times article. While it made a modest operating profit of $281,000 in 2009, Canonical struggled to stay solvent until 2017, and the company suffered significant financial setbacks as a result of the development of Unity and Ubuntu Touch, which resulted in an operating loss of $21.6 million for the 2013 fiscal year.[21]

In 2017, the business declared an operating profit of $2 million following the closure of the Unity development team and the termination of close to 200 workers. The business will now concentrate on its server and expert support offerings, which have shown to be the most lucrative. Canonical intends to do this in order to keep its solvency and generate long-term profits. There are more than 600 workers at Canonical.[5]

Previously located on the 27th floor of Millbank Tower, the head office is now located in London on the 5th floor of the Blue Fin Building, Southwark Street,[25].[26] Canonical established an office in Montreal during the summer of 2006 to house its global support and services operation.[19] A Canonical office is also located at Taipei 101.[27] An OEM team used to be based in Lexington, Massachusetts in the United States.
