ABOUT UNILEVER COMPANY

Multinational consumer goods corporation Unilever is well-known throughout the world. With its main offices in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and London, the United Kingdom, Unilever is one of the biggest and most varied businesses in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. Established in 1930, it boasts an extensive collection of well-known brands that include food and drink items, household cleaners, cosmetics, and personal hygiene items.

Among its well-known brands are Ben & Jerry’s, Lipton, Knorr, Dove, and Axe. In addition to its wide product line, Unilever is well-known for its dedication to ethical and sustainable business practices. The business has led the way in programs that support social impact, ethical sourcing, and environmental sustainability.

On September 2, 1929, British soap manufacturer Lever Brothers and Dutch margarine manufacturer Margarine Unie merged to form Unilever plc, a multinational fast-moving consumer goods business. At the moment, its headquarters are in London. Baby food, cosmetics, bottled water, breakfast cereals, energy drinks, cleaning supplies, condiments, instant coffee, pet food, medications, soft drinks, tea, and toothpaste are just a few of the goods produced by Unilever.

It is the world’s biggest manufacturer of soap[3], and more than 190 countries carry its goods. Axe (Lynx), Ben & Jerry’s, Dove, Hellmann’s, Knorr, Lifebuoy, Lux, Magnum, Omo (Persil), Rexona, Sunlight, Sunsilk, and Wall’s (Heartbrand) are some of Unilever’s best-known brands.[4] The business is divided into five divisions: Ice Cream, Personal Care, Home Care, Beauty & Wellbeing, and Nutrition. China, India, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States are home to its research and development centers. Unilever purchased the United Africa Company in the 1930s.

The company expanded its operations globally and diversified its product line beyond oils and fats during the latter part of the 20th century. Lipton (1971), Brooke Bond (1984), Pond’s (1987), Hellmann’s (2000), Ben & Jerry’s (2000), SlimFast (2000), Knorr (2000), Alberto-Culver (2010), and Dollar Shave Club (2016) are just a few of the many companies it has acquired.

The operations of British soap manufacturer Lever Brothers and Dutch margarine maker Margarine Unie merged to form Unilever in September 1929. The new company’s name is a portmanteau of the names of the original two companies.[7] The company expanded in the 1930s, and new projects were started in Latin America and Africa.

The United Africa Company, which was formed by the union of the African & Eastern Trade Corporation and the Royal Niger Company, which managed British commercial interests in modern-day Nigeria during the colonial era, was purchased by Unilever during this period.[8]

Unilever was forced to acquire new companies in the United States and the United Kingdom after the Nazi occupation of Europe during World War II prevented it from reinvesting its capital in the continent. In 1954, Sunsilk was first introduced in the UK.[15]

The US launched Dove for the first time in 1957.[15] In 1957, Unilever fully acquired Frosted Foods, rebranding it as Birds Eye.[16] In 1961, the US-based Good Humor ice cream company was purchased. As of the mid-1960s, Unilever’s corporate profits were primarily derived from edible fats and laundry soap.[11]

Unilever was compelled to diversify, nevertheless, due to a stagnant market for yellow fats (butter, margarine, and related goods) and growing Procter & Gamble competition in the detergent and soap industries.[11] In 1971, Unilever purchased Lipton Ltd., a British company, from Allied Suppliers.[11]

When National Starch was bought out for $487 million in 1978, it was the biggest foreign takeover of a US company to that point. Through acquisitions, Unilever increased its share of the Western European ice cream market to 30% by the end of the 1970s.[11]

The management of Unilever made the decision to restructure the company in 1982, going from a disorganized conglomerate to a more focused fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) business. In 1984, Unilever successfully acquired Brooke Bond, the manufacturer of PG Tips tea, for a sum of £390 million.

[11] The manufacturer of Ragú, Pond’s, Aqua-Net, Cutex, and Vaseline, Ponds (formed from the merger of Chesebrough Manufacturing and Pond’s Creams) was acquired by Unilever in 1986 as part of another hostile takeover to bolster its position in the global skincare market.[19]

Calvin Klein Cosmetics, Fabergé, and Elizabeth Arden were acquired by Unilever in 1989; however, the latter was later sold (in 2000) to FFI Fragrances. Unilever declared in 2003 that it had made the strategic choice to divest the Dalda brand in Pakistan and India.[34]

For allegedly less than Rs 1 billion, Bunge Limited purchased the Dalda brand from Hindustan Unilever Limited in 2003.[35] On March 30, 2004, Unilever Pakistan approved a Rs. 1.33 billion offer to sell its edible oils and fats business, along with the Dalda brand, to Dalda Foods (Pvt.) Limited, a recently established company.

The company sold its Loders Croklaan specialty oils and fats division to IOI Corporation, an oil palm company based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2002 for RM814 million (€218.5 million). The agreement included the preservation of the Loders Croklaan name.[37] Brands such as Golden Griddle, Karo, Argo & Kingsfords, and Mazola were sold by Unilever.
