The Value Added Services (VAS) PD within Visa includes the Risk and Identity Solutions (RaIS) as a crucial element. A suite of highly visible, highly profitable, and high-volume applications called VAS-RaIS offers solutions for identity and authentication, risk management, and both. Globally, major participants in the payment ecosystem heavily rely on our services.

The Project Analyst will be primarily in charge of overseeing different work streams in the Business Management Office of Risk and Identity Solutions. Important duties consist of being accountable for overseeing executive watch lists, metrics, and project/program-level reporting. In Fresno, California, on September 18, 1958, Bank of America (BofA) formally introduced the BankAmericard credit card program.[7] A “drop” of 65,000 unsolicited credit cards was sent by BofA in the weeks before BankAmericard launched, flooding Fresno mailboxes with unsolicited credit cards.[7][14]

Joseph P. Williams, the head of BofA’s internal product development think tank, the Customer Services Research Group, was the driving force behind BankAmericard. In 1956, Williams persuaded top BofA executives to grant him permission to attempt what turned out to be the first-ever successful mass mailing of unsolicited credit cards to a broad audience.

These were real credit cards, not just applications. Williams’ seminal contribution was not in formulating the concept but rather in seeing the all-purpose credit card through to successful implementation (i.e., his project was not abandoned).[15] The average middle-class American already had revolving credit accounts with multiple merchants by the middle of the 1950s, which was obviously inefficient and inconvenient because it required carrying so many cards and making so many separate monthly bill payments.[16]

The American financial services industry was already aware of the need for a single financial instrument, but no one could come up with a solution. In addition, “by the mid-1950s, there had been at least a dozen attempts to create an all-purpose credit card.” Diners Club and other charge cards already existed, and they required full payment at the conclusion of each billing cycle.[16]

These earlier attempts, though, had been made by tiny banks that lacked the funding necessary to make them successful.[16] Williams and his group closely examined these bank failures and felt that by doing so, they could avoid making the same mistakes those banks had made. They also examined the success of Sears and Mobil Oil’s revolving credit operations to gain insight into their own. 

Fresno was selected for its population of 250,000 (big enough to make a credit card work, small enough to control initial startup cost), BofA’s market share of that population (45%), and relative isolation, to control public relations damage in case the project failed. According to Williams,  was the first major retail chain that agreed to accept BankAmericard at its stores.
